“In early 2004, we recognized the need to take our cost estimating efforts “to the next level”. Upon examining our cost estimating operations and procedures, we concluded that we could no longer continue to simply use spreadsheets to perform our cost estimates. We spent the next several months investigating the various cost estimating software programs that were available and in July 2004, we opted to purchase Timberline Estimating. Our decision was based upon the fact that Timberline was competitively priced, utilized self-contained cost databases, integrated easily with Means, allowed for the use of Assemblies and appeared to be relatively easy to use.Our initial approach was to purchase just a few licenses and see how well the product met our needs. We declined to purchase any software training. I had thought if the software met our needs and we could figure out how to use it on our own, then the money we would have otherwise spent on training could be used to purchase additional licenses.I am happy to report that we never required any training. These features include: the ability to separately list or allocate add-on items, the utilization of assemblies, the development of cost models and the ease with which quarterly material/labor indexes can be applied to the cost database. We could not imagine reverting back to using spreadsheets for estimating.
